Can you believe this exquisite oak tree started from a tiny acorn more than 150 years ago? A squirrel could have eaten the acorn. Drought could have starved it of water. And a strong wind could have blown it over. Loggers could have used it to build homes-—or make paper. Or, developers could have chopped it down to make way for a new shopping center. Yet for more than a century, this tree has stood in this place, growing mightier every year.
In Lancaster, only 15% of forested lands remain. The Lancaster County Conservancy protects and preserves as many of them as possible. We believe our forests and streams are the lifeblood of healthy ecosystems and dramatically improve our quality of life. You and I will lose the Lancaster we love if we don’t care for them!
Can you imagine how, with time and proper management of these lands, we could repair our forests so they would be full of mighty trees like this one?
The Lancaster County Conservancy’s stewardship program is responsible for making sure our forests are as healthy as they can be. This means we remove invasive species, create riparian buffers to protect our streams, and encourage healthy habitat for animals. Over time, our trees are restored to their healthy, old growth state. The Conservancy adds marked trails in protected lands so you can go into the woods and experience our natural world and commune with these amazing trees.
Your support of the Conservancy helps us to protect and steward lands so your children and grandchildren will be able to interact with forests full of healthy, old trees.
We can’t manipulate the wind or ensure the proper amount of rain. We can’t control the appetites of hungry squirrels. But we can care for the trees and creatures that depend on them, even as population growth marches forward and threatens our wonderful wild lands.
By making a donation to the Conservancy’s land acquisition program today, you can help us prevent further loss of forested land from clearing. Your contribution will help us care for the more than 5,000 acres of forests we have already preserved. Won’t you please make a meaningful contribution towards protecting and stewarding big old, trees today?
