Ecology and Management

de Perrot Woods is managed for its habitat being of highest and best use.

The preserve consists of mixed hardwoods. It provides winter views of a rolling landscape and, in the wintertime, more distant views of farmland and the Furnace Hills. A shallow ravine divides the northerly third from the southerly two-thirds of the preserve.

De Perrot Woods Nature Preserve is a hike-in only preserve and is located adjacent to Mile 2 of the 60-mile long Conestoga Trail as it traverses across private property parallel (north/south) to the length of the preserve; the preserve being approximately half the trail distance between Speedwell Forge Lake Access Area and Upper Hopewell Forge Nature Preserve; also within a 3.5 mile radius is Speedwell Forge County Park, State Game Lands No. 156 and State Game Lands No. 46, and two Conservancy properties to the north, including Upper Hopewell Forge Nature Preserve (8 acres) and Rannels-Kettle Run Nature Preserve (90 acres).

Watershed

de Perrot Woods overlooks a small tributary that joins Hammer Creek within the Speedwell Forge Lake. Hammer Creek empties into the Conestoga River and furthermore into the Susquehanna River.

Claire de Perrot donated this land to the Conservancy in 2015.

Spotted Lanternfly Alert!

Lancaster County is a Spotted Lanternfly quarantine area. This highly invasive insect is a serious threat to the health of our forests.

What you can do to help:

  1. Report spotted lanternfly sightings to Penn State Extension or call 1-888-4BADFLY.
  2. Stop the Spread. Look before you leave! Check gear, vehicles, and trailers.
  3. Smash them, bash them, kill them dead.
  4. Scrap and smash egg masses.
